Like with other things in life, not all diamonds are made equal. To most people a diamond is a diamond is a diamond; what is the difference really as long as it sparkles? To the average lay person this may be a fair question but to those in the business or who are very discerning diamond or jewelry buyers, they want to know every single detail about the diamond they are purchasing. This means having a handle on the so-called “4 C’s.” They are as follows:
- Carat weight. This is the unit of weight for all gemstones. Each carat is divided into 100 points and there are 5 carats in a single gram. The word originated from the use of carob tree pod seeds to measure weight – this was used until the 20th century.
- Clarity. This is determined by things called inclusions, which are found inside the diamond and surface features called blemishes. This takes into account the number, position, size, and color of both.
- Color. A diamond’s color ranges from colorless (D) to deeply colored (Z). Anything beyond the Z rating is called fancy colors.
- Cut. This determines if the diamond catches a person’s eye.
