grading diamondsLike with other things in life, not all diamonds are made equal.  To most people a diamond is a diamond is a diamond; what is the difference really as long as it sparkles?  To the average lay person this may be a fair question but to those in the business or who are very discerning diamond or jewelry buyers, they want to know every single detail about the diamond they are purchasing.  This means having a handle on the so-called “4 C’s.”  They are as follows:

  • Carat weight.  This is the unit of weight for all gemstones.  Each carat is divided into 100 points and there are 5 carats in a single gram.  The word originated from the use of carob tree pod seeds to measure weight – this was used until the 20th century.
  • Clarity.  This is determined by things called inclusions, which are found inside the diamond and surface features called blemishes.  This takes into account the number, position, size, and color of both.
  • Color.  A diamond’s color ranges from colorless (D) to deeply colored (Z).  Anything beyond the Z rating is called fancy colors.
  • Cut.  This determines if the diamond catches a person’s eye.

fancy yellow diamondWhy?  Well, fancy yellow diamonds are just not something most people see every day.  I imagine you and most people you know have seen the normal clear diamonds.  Of course these diamonds, regardless of cut or shape, are beautiful but they are commonplace enough to easily blend in among a host of other rings, necklaces, and other types of diamond jewelry.  Since your loved one’s birthday is coming up, you do not want to get her a gift that is not so commonplace?

Fancy yellow diamonds are a rare form of diamond akin to sapphires, rubies, and the like.  The geological processes that create diamonds in the first place differ enough to give these specific diamonds their various shades of yellow.  Their unique coloring is such that it would make an excellent choice of diamond to be part of a ring or diamond necklace.  Imagine how happy and full of pride your significant other will be wearing yellow diamond jewelry that no one else will have.  Seeing them in the “wild”, as it were, is something to behold for sure.

The next time you are out shopping for jewelry, do not just gloss over the section of yellow diamonds; they are well worth the time to check out.

The Diamond Tennis Bracelet

January 2nd, 2012 | Posted by daniela in gemstone jewelry - (0 Comments)

diamond tennis braceletThe diamond tennis bracelet has an interesting story behind it. 25 years ago, there was no distinguishing an ordinary diamond bracelet from its thinner counterpart. But when Chris Evert, the world’s former No. 1 women’s tennis player was playing in the 1987 U.S. Open, her slim diamond tennis bracelet broke. The match was paused to allow her to collect the spilled diamonds. Afterward, all diamond tennis bracelets of a thin, lightweight style were called tennis bracelets. Even today, stars such as Serena Williams wear diamond tennis bracelets on the court and off.

These bracelets are so popular because they are elegant, easy to wear, and light enough to feel comfortable in when wearing evening dress or more casual clothing. Because diamonds are colorless they are easy to pair with dark and light colors, as well as other jewelry, such as yellow diamond rings or other colored gemstone rings.

Diamond jewelry in general is one of the best ways to exude class and gentility. And the style of the diamond tennis bracelet symbolizes a more active lifestyle than the traditional diamond earrings or diamond pendant; it’s a more modern style of jewelry wear which makes it considerably more appealing for the active woman.

emerald jewelryIt usually takes a few dates before you’re willing to buy her emerald jewelry, but if you decide to, chances are she’s worth it. But if you’re unsure, there’s no rush. Here are a few tips to help you know that she’s worth gemstone rings.

You don’t make each other jealous. Jealousy is a red flag that never winds up well.

You were raised similarly. This may sound vague and it is, but if you’ve ever had a talk about the differences in how you were raised, i.e. the things you’re used to in character  not being what she’s used to in a person, perhaps you don’t have what it takes to make it work long-term.

You share the same politics. This is by far the most subjective tip on this list, but you know that when you share political views, you are working from the same foundation. Usually that foundation is strong enough to support a long-term relationship.

Of course there’s nothing wrong with buying emerald jewelry for the one you love, even when you know or don’t care whether it’s going to work in the long run. If you’re buying gemstone rings to celebrate the moment, so be it. Just don’t ask for them back.

diamond tennis braceletSometimes when you feel weird and sad and you remember your last love and all the nice yellow diamonds you bought her, you feel alone. But life has the oddest habit of working in waves, or to paraphrase Bob Dylan, to show the deepest dark before the light. You may soon find yourself with someone new, who is better than you possibly thought they could be and now you want to thank them for coming into your life, for showing up at just the right minute. Consider a diamond tennis bracelet.

This small token is enough to express how much this person means to you. And like all jewelry, it will conjure memories of you whenever they put it on and all those feelings of adoration and love will come flooding back. That is the power of memory, which is both fortunate and compelling– it can recall the saddest and hardest times of our lives as well as the sweetest and best. But the best thing about a diamond tennis bracelet or yellow diamond rings, for example, is that they remind you that you’re alive. They give you a rush of feeling, and that feeling is it, is what makes life.

Tips for Giving Yellow Diamonds

November 7th, 2011 | Posted by daniela in yellow diamonds - (0 Comments)

yellow diamondsThe holiday season will be here before you know it. It’s time to start thinking about what you’re going to get your loved one. Don’t get experimental now, go with what you know. If she likes wearing yellow diamonds, so be it. Get her another yellow diamond. Don’t try to get her emerald jewelry just because you think it would look good on her (unless she’s given you an explicit tip).

Unless you’re proposing you don’t need to surprise her. Keep it simple and give her her present in its box. If you are proposing with yellow diamond engagement rings, you can surprise her, but don’t put the ring in her food or drink. If you’re going to add a ring to a piece of chocolate cake, make sure it’s visible. Choking stories exist, and how embarrassing would that be. I wouldn’t marry you if I choked on a ring you gave me…

The winter is a perfect time to propose. Smooth hair, red cheeks, wearing fur, soft quiet snow on the ground, it’s all so romantic. Either way, you have to get her a Christmas present, so start shopping for whatever style of jewelry she prefers. As long as you follow these tips you can’t go wrong. They’re yellow diamonds, after all.

emerald jewelryEmerald jewelry means different things to different people. Since green is my favorite color, to me it conjures images of the emerald isle, miles of tufted green grass leading to a cool dark sea; the highest point in my life, when my husband proposed to me on a winter vacation, under the heavy evergreen perfume of fresh snow and ripe pine needles; the rich green of my daughter’s eyes, medieval and thick in their deep glow, innocent, yet aware, as though conscious of a truth long obscured by our adult social shortcomings.

Who knows, maybe I’d feel entirely different about emerald jewelry if my favorite color were red or blue. Maybe then I’d wish David would have had proposed to me with ruby jewelry or sapphire jewelry, and for our honeymoon have taken me to the languorous relaxation of tropical seas, or back in time through the dry epochs of prehistory in the red-rocky west…

Alas I can only imagine. I’m just glad David knew me well enough to look at how emerald jewelry enhances my fair skin and red hair, and continue with the green theme. His favorite color is yellow, and his birthday is coming up…Gold? Fancy yellow diamonds?

semi mountsAs the weather changes, we begin to see different jewelry styles emerge. There is an emphasis on brilliance during the colder months; silver and gold and diamonds become the norm. Yellow diamonds and bright colored metals are trendy this winter. Much of the jewelry coming out is large and lightweight, and there is a current trend of more, not less.

That means large semi mounts with big emerald jewelry and ruby jewelry, yellow diamond rings, big bangles, lots of frill and fringe, and heavy necklaces. Wear it all so that you wind up choosing your outfit around your jewelry instead of the other way around.

Depending on the color of your veins, blue being a cooler complexion, green being a warmer, the former should consider white gold, platinum, silver and complementary red, blue, pink and purple gemstone jewelry. The latter should wear gold, copper, and other earthy colors: coral, green, turquoise, peach. These are just guidelines of course, a cool-complexioned woman can totally wear gold and turquoise earrings, it all depends on how confidently she pulls them off.

So no matter the season or your skin tone, all that matters is that you feel good in whatever gemstone jewelry you wear.
