  • Necklaces.  First you need to figure out if you’re wearing a low-cut or high-neck dress.  There is no hard rule to this but it would be best if you work within the boundaries of good taste.  Keep that in mind when wearing a necklace.
  • Bracelets.  Bracelets should only be worn on your right wrist.  With a diamond-studded bracelet you do not want it to be loose; if it was loose, you would run the risk of it colliding with a hard surface and dislodging or damaging the bracelet.
  • Earrings.  Long, dangling earrings look great with smooth hair and tall women.  On the other hand if you are petite, small earrings would work best.
  • Rings.  Rings are usually considered the penultimate jewelry to wear due to their aesthetic and symbolic value.  Women with slim fingers should wear small diamonds of 2 carats or less.

  • If you are always fumbling about with your jewelry box, unsure as to what you will be wearing for the night out, you should take everything out of the compartments and simply reorganize it.  A great way to do this is to organize your jewelry by occasion, i.e. formal and casual.   This will help you get on your way that much quicker.  You can also organize by color sets, which will work well if you are going out wearing your favorite colored dress.

What Are the 4 C’s of Diamonds?

grading diamondsLike with other things in life, not all diamonds are made equal.  To most people a diamond is a diamond is a diamond; what is the difference really as long as it sparkles?  To the average lay person this may be a fair question but to those in the business or who are very discerning diamond or jewelry buyers, they want to know every single detail about the diamond they are purchasing.  This means having a handle on the so-called “4 C’s.”  They are as follows:

  • Carat weight.  This is the unit of weight for all gemstones.  Each carat is divided into 100 points and there are 5 carats in a single gram.  The word originated from the use of carob tree pod seeds to measure weight – this was used until the 20th century.
  • Clarity.  This is determined by things called inclusions, which are found inside the diamond and surface features called blemishes.  This takes into account the number, position, size, and color of both.
  • Color.  A diamond’s color ranges from colorless (D) to deeply colored (Z).  Anything beyond the Z rating is called fancy colors.
  • Cut.  This determines if the diamond catches a person’s eye.

How to Color Coordinate Jewelry with Your Outfit

First, you need to know what the primary colors are;  red, blue, and yellow.  Next up are the secondary colors (which you get from mixing two of the primary colors): purple, orange, and green.  From there you can begin to color coordinate your wardrobe and accessories.

First, you have to determine which color is the dominant color of your outfit.  It is easy to figure out with solids. But if you are wearing a patterned blouse or shirt, choose the color there seems to be more of, or is more apparent. If it seems equal, you can actually work with either color as the dominant one. Next, you have to find the complement of primary color; they are:

  • Red & green
  • Yellow & purple
  • Blue & orange

How do you use this information?   If you have a purple dress you like to wear – and good for you for pulling that one off! – you can wear a yellow diamond necklace or similar jewelry to contrast with it.

jewelryLike with many other accessories you wear on a regular basis – i.e. watches – you should bring your precious jewelry to a jeweler for professional care and cleaning.  These jewelry experts have been handling precious metals, diamonds, and gemstones for a very long time and know how to properly maintain your jewelry without damaging it.  But between professional cleanings you should make your own efforts to take care of and clean your jewelry.  Here are a few basic cleaning tips.

  • For diamonds:  Use a non-metallic brush with soft bristles.  Dip it in a mild ammonia and water solution and gently wipe away any grime you find on the diamond.  Dirty buildup will usually occur around the prongs and setting.  This cleaning method will also remove the thin layer of skin oil that has accumulated due to constant use.  When wearing it try not to touch the actual diamond.
  • For the metal itself:  Use alcohol to clean metals like gold and silver but be careful not to use it on pearl jewelry.  That said, simple soap and water with a very soft brush will usually get the job done.  Use a soft cloth to dry and buff your jewelry.
